Edmonton, Alberta Bright Object Makes A Smooth Zig-Zag Motion

Good morning Brian, I hope your weekend was relaxing and enjoyable for you! I have a new experience to share with you! It isn't that exciting really, but it is similar to several stories I've read here on the site, so I thought I should submit mine too. Here it goes.

This morning (Monday, Oct. 27, 08) at around 7:40 AM, about 45 minutes before full sunrise, though the sky was brightening relatively quickly and there was a handful of bright stars/planets to be seen, I saw out my back (South-southwest facing) windows a bright light in the sky. This light was brighter than any other star or planet I could see at the time, and moving from west to east across northern Edmonton, Alberta.

The light was very bright, and there were no blinking lights with it. It had a smooth zig-zag to it's flight, like long curves similar to a slalom skier going across the sky. After watching it for about 90 seconds there was a small flash located significantly behind it, which was slightly less bright than the light itself. Given how fast the light was moving and it's apparent altitude, the flash could have been a couple hundred meters behind the light. It almost seemed like a flare but it was gone much too quickly for that to be it. I opened the back door to listen but couldn't distinguish any noise from it over the general din of the city. I then moved to the front window and watched it continue on Westward until I couldn't see it anymore.

I checked "Heavens Above" to see where the International Space Station was, and it showed the ISS was heading from North West to South East and was near the Atlantic. I've seen satellites and the ISS before. This light seemed smaller than the ISS but about as bright, and much bigger and brighter than satellites. I don't think it was the ISS because the direction is wrong, and I don't think the ISS can change directions as rapidly as this light was. Furthermore, there was a plane flying at high altitude in the sky at the time, and was on a flight path to cross over the light's path in a minute or so. I was able to clearly see the blinking lights on the plane at that higher altitude, and that the plane wasn't reflecting enough light from the rising Sun to make it very bright. The light was much brighter than the plane and had no blinking lights at all. Finally, I've seen individual meteors and meteor showers, and can recognize one when I see it. The light lasted nearly 3 minutes that I could see, which at that time I lost in the brightness of the rising Sun.

It was an odd thing to see, and it's movement is what convinced me to write in. The zig-zags were very smooth and seemed intentional. Thanks!

Thank you to the witness for their report.
