Shaft Of Orange Light Seen In The Sky Over Edmonton Alberta (Case Solved – Light Pillar Ice Crystals)

Posted:  January 16, 2012

Vike Factor Note: Recently a number of sighting reports came from folks who reside in Edmonton, Alberta. People reported seeing a strange vertical bright orange beam of light in the sky over Edmonton Alberta.

I wasn’t sure what the people were/had seen so I started looking around the internet to see if there was a reasonable explanation for what was observed.

For me, two ideas came up, one thought was that people may have seen an “Aurora/Northern Lights” and the other possibly was a “Light Pillar”.

After researching a little more, I found that the “Light Pillar” was going to make more sense as to the cause for this sighting that took place on January 11, 2012 at approximately 11:00 p.m. and 11:30 p.m.

I therefore, wrote an email to the TELUS World of Science – Edmonton, Alberta and the Edmonton Sun newspaper. I was hoping one or both parties might be able to help in solving this mystery.

First thing Monday morning I received a nice response from Mr. Frank Florian B.Sc., B.Ed from the TELUS World of Science and he confirmed my thoughts on the light as being, a “Pillar of Light”

Below is Mr. Frank Florian’s reply to me:

Hi Brian, you are correct in your assumption that the effect of the vertical shaft of light was due to ice crystals.  We just had a cold front move into the Edmonton area bringing temperatures down to below -20 Celcius and many individuals saw various atmospheric effects from the ice crystals that formed in the air, everything from Sun pillars and Parry Arcs during the day to light pillars off street lights and other bright light sources in the evening.

Here is an email I received from a fellow Royal Astronomical of Canada (RASC) Edmonton Centre member who took a photograph of a Sun pillar and Parry arc with a website that describes the phenomenon:

Vike Factor Note: Here is the website address, but I have not included the photo.

Member of the Royal Astronomical of Canada (RASC) comment: I took this at 4:06 January 15, 2012. Sun pillar capped with a Parry arc. More about Parry arcs here: http://www.atoptics.co.uk/halo/parry1.htm

Also below, is another sighting report on the vertical light with photos an eye witness filmed.

Time:  Approx: 11:30 p.m.

Number of witnesses: 2
Number of Objects: 1

Full Description of Event/Sighting: Orange vertical light in sky, looked like the sky was opening up. It was really bright, almost pulsating. Too big to be a ship I think, but it was defiantly unexplainable at least to me.

I took two pictures, but they are really grainy as my camera is not made for night time. The two pictures are © 2012 Steven Townsend.

Black Oval Shaped Object Over Tecumseh Ontario

Date:  April 7, 2011
Time:  8:15 p.m.

Number of witnesses: 2
Number of Objects: 1
Shape of Objects: Long and flat.

Full Description of Event/Sighting: We were driving down county road 22 when we were going by a small industrial area and we looked up and to the north and saw this black oval shaped object. It seemed really flat and thin with one light flashing in the front.

I called my girlfriend back at her place to see if she could see anything from Windsor, Ontario, she said she couldn't see a thing.

It must be too far off, but what she did notice was a bunch of planes that seem to have just turned away from that direction and were flying faster then normal, moving south west.

To me this is something. What we just don't know.

Huge Fireball Falling Out Of The Sky Over Trout Creek Between Summerland And Penticton British Columbia

Date:  January 10, 2012
Time:  Approx: 8:50 p.m.

Hi Brian, I saw your website when I Googled "fireball January 10th"

I live in Trout Creek (between Summerland & Penticton), and I witnessed a huge fireball dropping down towards Okanagan Mountain Park at approx. 8:50 p.m. on January 10th, 2012. I didn't see anything in the news, that's why I Googled to see if anyone else saw it.

I know we just finished with a meteor shower, so I thought it was from that. Let me know if you hear anything else about it. Thanks.

Date:  January 11, 2012
Time:  Between 11:00 p.m. and 11:30 p.m.

We saw it too in downtown Edmonton and texted our friend to look too. We got video and photos as well but I don't think they turned out very well. We thought maybe it was a single northern light, but it didn't wave, just pulsated.

At first it was very bright red, then slowly faded into bright orange, then faded away in time.

Cluster Of Around 12 Strange Lights Seen Over Cloverdale British Columbia

Date:  December 22, 2011
Time:  Evening.

Brian, on the evening of December 22, 2011 my husband and I were up late wrapping Christmas presents (no we were not drinking either!) when he got up to let our dogs out. He started yelling for me to come outside and "see this".

We stood in our backyard facing south near 64th and 168th Street in Cloverdale and watched a cluster of strange lights travel across the sky. I could see at least a dozen at one point. They came from the east and slowly moved west.

We watched them for two or three minutes. The clouds were low lying that evening, so we knew that whatever was in the sky was flying low, but strangely enough we heard nothing. There was silence.

We live close to the flight path and frequently hear planes on their way to and from YVR, even when we cannot see the lights of those aircraft, we can hear them.
The lights were too close together to be planes or helicopters. It was eerie to say the least and I wanted to notify someone, but thought I would sound like a lunatic to the authorities. It was strange enough for me to tell a few people to the next day, but no one I spoke with had seen it.

If I had been alone I would have thought I had been seeing things. I was relieved to see the sighting in the paper yesterday, but it still leaves me with an uneasy feeling. Up until that night, I would not have believed in UFO's, but I feel nothing else describes it.

My husband has suggested that it was a practice run for next years Mayan Calendar prediction. I guess only time will tell.
A Cloverdale BC Resident.

Silent Round Bright Orange Object Flew Over Edmonton Alberta

Date:  January 6, 2012
Time:  Approx: 10:30 p.m.

On January 6th, 2012 at around 10:30 p.m. I saw a round bright orange object coming from the west travelling east, slowly gliding through the sky. It was not as high as an airplane nor helicopter, there was no sound as it passed by my house just to the north a bit.

I have absolutely no idea what this was as I’ve never seen it before. Would be interesting to find out just what was this ?

Date:  January 11, 2012

Yes, we have witnessed the same thing, I tried to get it on my cell, but wouldn’t record because it’s just not the same as using a high tech camera. I immediately notified a few people and they too said yes they can see it.

The light seemed to pulsate then slowly turned from orange to white then faded away.

Peculiar Vertical Bright Orange Beam Of Light In The Sky Over Edmonton Alberta

Date:  January 11, 2012
Time:  Approx: 11:15 p.m.

Vike Factor Note: This strange occurrence was seen by another person who filed a report on the sighting: Vertical Orange Beam Of Light Seen From Edmonton Alberta” http://the-v-factor-paranormal.blogspot.com/2012/01/vertical-orange-beam-of-light-seen-from.html

Hello Brian, this week on Wednesday January 11th, 2012 I witnessed a very peculiar orange beam of light in the sky. At about a 11:15 p.m. a few friends and myself were driving back home from west Edmonton Mall, when my girlfriend in the passenger seat excitedly pointed something out.

When I looked into the sky, I saw a large beam of very bright orange light pointing nearly vertically into the sky. At first I thought It was an illusion of one of the lights on the road reflecting off the car window, as the light had the same vibrant orange glow, but as we drove it didn't seem to move from it's place, and would slightly dim and then grow bright again.

We watched it the whole way home, and then I stood on my back deck at my home and watched until either it faded out too much to see, or the city lights and haze in the distance blocked it out. I wasn't able to see it any longer by 11:45 p.m.

It was the strangest thing, I've ever seen a light like that in the sky before, and I do quite a bit of star watching. It seemed to have no origin, the beam of light wasn't coming from the ground up, it was just a small streak in the sky.

I really had hoped others aside from us in the car had seen this, and was fortunate enough to find your blog with the entry of the couple witnessing the same thing on the same night. I left a comment, but decided I should contact you with my whole sighting anyways. Thanks.

3 Orange Lights Observed Flying In The Sky Over Surrey British Columbia

Date:  December 22 or 23, 2011
Time:  Between 11:00 p.m. and midnight.

I live 2 blocks south of 60th and 181st and was getting ready for bed a couple of nights before Christmas.

I looked south out of my bedroom window to see if there might be any snow and saw 3 little oranges light moving very slowly, one at a time, very high in the sky.

The first one moved toward my house location, seemed to stop, made a 90 degree right turn and moved east. The second and third followed the same pattern.

I dragged my 17 year old son outside onto the deck to watch, and he thought they definitely were not airplanes, especially given the extreme right turn they each made.

There are very large evergreen trees blocking part of the southern sky for us, so I didn't wait around to see if there are more.

They moved very slowly east, but it was too cold to stand outside watching so we went back in.

Vertical Orange Beam Of Light Seen From Edmonton Alberta

Date:  January 11, 2012
Time:  11:30 p.m.

Good Afternoon, last night around 23:30 MNT in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, my husband noticed a vertical orange beam to the east of the moon. At first we thought it was a beam from a neighbors house light, but as we watched the light it was like it was alive.

It would fade and brighten, grow longer and shorter, and almost disappear then come back.  It looked like the sky was going to split open, what an amazing sight! We enjoyed watching the orange light dance for a few minutes, then it faded away.

What was that?

Two Sightings Of Orange Lights Flying Through The Sky Over Cloverdale British Columbia

Date:  November 20, 2011 and again on December 22, 2011
Time: Approx: 8:00 p.m.

Hi Brian, just read the report in the Cloverdale Reporter about "Strange lights over Cloverdale". I experienced a similar thing on November 20, 2011 (scrolled back on my Facebook page to see the date). I was walking alongside the Cloverdale Athletic Park at about 8:00 p.m. when a truck pulled over and a man jumped out shouting "look at that" and pointing west.

I turned around and saw 4 orange lights in a diamond formation moving slowly across the sky. In the meantime, the man's teenage daughter got out and watched and another truck pulled over with 2 more people in it. So 5 of us all saw the same thing for a couple of minutes.

All of a sudden the lights, one by one, disappeared like someone had just flicked a switch off. I posted it on my Facebook page and heard from another Cloverdale resident that her son's friend said he saw the same thing and had pictures.

I asked for the pictures but never received them.

Then on December 22, 2011 my 19 year old son and his girlfriend came charging into the house shouting that they had just seen the same thing I had. Then my husband came in and said he saw the same thing as did several of our neighbors who were also outside that evening.

I don't know how much information you want, but wanted to pass on the basic information. Please feel free to contact me if you need any more information. Thank you.

Orange Lights Seen On Three Different Occasions From Eyewitnesses Home At Cloverdale British Columbia (Pictures)

Date:  November 20, 2011 and December 22 and December 31, 2011
Time:  Approx: 8:00 p.m.

Hi, we saw the orange lights over our home in Cloverdale on November 20, December 22, and December 31, 2011. The first sightings were about 8:00 p.m. when I went outside to mail some mail into the mailboxes beside our home.

There were about 7 of them and flying really close together. I first thought planes but these were flying too close together and moving erratically. I ran inside to get my husband and son and they couldn't believe their eyes.

By the time I ran to grab my camera (the battery was not in it, the scan card wasn't in it, etc.,) the lights were seen just barely, but I got a photo of 2 of them as they vanished over the horizon.

The lights were travelling east to west and were flying in the same direction on the 22nd of December.

My husband and I were walking across the street to visit and he became speechless and started pointing up to the sky.

There were about 13 of them this time and he did video them.

The kids were all outside for New Years eve and they saw the lights on that evening and told the adults. The adults at the party couldn't believe their eyes either.

So, we have seen them 3 times in 2 months flying over Cloverdale and they were really bright orange, and flying in the same direction and looked the same.
I will attach a photo from the 20th of November.

The first photo, 0432, is a blown up photo as I photo zoomed in on it to get a better look. We also have video from December 22 that my husband took.

Has been very interesting and a mystery to our family for a while now. We were relieved to see the report in our local paper as a lot of people haven't seen these lights and unless you've seen them yourself, it is really a bizarre sighting.

Strange Lights Over Cloverdale

Cloverdale Reporter Newspaper

A couple of nights before Christmas Eve a Cloverdale man and his son were driving home along 60 Avenue west from 176 Street in Surrey when they were distracted by some unusual lights in the sky near their house.

The driver pulled over, grabbed his cell phone, and immediately started recording, hoping to capture the strange sight on video.

His Dec. 22 footage – since posted to Youtube – shows several clusters of bright, white lights that appear to change pattern and move against an inky black sky.

Bright Flash Object Was Filled With Yellow And Orange No Tail Noted Over London Ontario

Date:  January 10, 2012
Time:  8:30 p.m. – 9:30 p.m.

Number of witnesses: 1
Number of Objects: 1
Shape of Objects: Round, fading on left side (east).

Full Description of Event/Sighting: I was outside smoking, noticed a flash in the sky north of my location, approximately 60-65 degrees. It was brief, lasting only a second or two. It was a bright round sharp circle filled with yellow and orange, slight blur on left (east) no tail, however, there was a dark spot on the left center side.

It was a clear sky, could see stars clearly. Live next to airport, no visible airplanes in that direction or altitude at the time, no other lights but stars in that direction. It caught my eye because of the size of the ball, and how quickly it vanished leaving no trace.

I know the headlights of aircraft and that was not it, nor any falling debris as there was no tail, just a sharp round flash.

A Bright Light In UFO Tracking: Brian Vike

A boy across the street from Brian Vike's house was tilting a new-looking telescope at the moon last Tuesday.

Chances are, he saw what any budding stargazer would expect to see—eye-popping views of the massive lava basins and colossal impact craters that scar the lunar surface.

But if Vike's young neighbour ever spots something strange in the Houston sky, something he can't explain, he won't have to go far to make a UFO report.

"Just what I need," said Vike, laughing.

Orange Pink Lights Stop And Maneuver Into A Triangular Object Over Maple Ridge British Columbia

Date:  January 7, 2012
Time:  Approx: 7:00 p.m.

Hi, last night my son and I were bbq ing  around 7:00 p.m. when a strange orange/pink light was travelling across the sky. My son said look a plane, but it didn't look quite like a plane to me, so I ran and got my wife because the object had come to a stop in the sky.

By the time my wife came outside to join us, a second light appeared. They were moving slowly into a formation and had both stopped when a third light then appeared and eventually formed a triangle. After staying in a triangular formation for about 3 minutes, the first ball of light then started moving again.

The 2 remaining lights followed the same path, one by one moving at the same slow speed that they had started with. One by one they disappeared in the night sky. We would like some feed back if you have any other people that may have seen this. We live in Maple Ridge, British Columbia and this happened on January 7, 2012 around 7:00 p.m. Thanks.

3 Bright Orange Lights In A Triangle Formation Over Beamsville Ontario

Date:  December 31 2011
Time:  Approx: 10:30 p.m.

On December 31, 2011 at approximately 10:30 p.m. I was walking home from a friends house with my boyfriend when we look up in the sky over Beamsville, Ontario and saw three very bright orange lights.

3 lights in an acute triangle formation not making a single move, until suddenly one after the other they started from the top, the lights flickered and disappeared into no where.

Stars I believe these were not. Far to bright and inside our atmosphere. With a cloudy sky and not a single star or light ( except those) in the sky.

Date:  December 31, 2011

Red Orange Object Seen Flying Over Camrose Alberta

Date:  January 1, 2012
Time:  Approx: 12:30 a.m.

Myself and a few friends saw a similar thing outside of a bar here in Camrose, Alberta at approximately 12:30 a.m. January 2012. One orange/red orb moving east to west lasted about 4 minutes.

It seems that people have seen this all over the country and the world last night shorty after bringing in the New Year.

This is very strange indeed!

One Large Orange Red Glowing Light Over Glencoe Ontario

Date:  December 31, 2011
Time:  Approx: 11:00 p.m.

At approximately 11:00 p.m. on December 31, 2011 over Glencoe Ontario, there was a (one) huge orange/red glowing light that was almost the size of a minivan. At first we thought it was a helicopter, but it was silent and there were no blinking lights.

It travelled NE and then quietly and swiftly disappeared. The light was oval in shape.

Golden Orange Objects Flying Over Brantford Ontario

Date:  January 1, 2012
Time:  12:39 a.m.

Hi Brian and all, I guess I have a bit more information on the Cambridge, Ontario Canada UFO sighting. I concur with almost everything the young gentleman claimed in his sighting on New Years Day. I however saw the occurrence at 12:39 a.m. New Years Day.

I live in Brantford, which is about 40km southwest of Cambridge. I looked out the kitchen window (north facing) to check the meteorological conditions, we had light fog, low clouds. That was when I noticed the golden orb (coloured like a candle flame, so orange was a reasonable description from the Cambridge Gentleman) in the sky north of me, but coming from 90 degrees east.

I thought it was quite pretty so continued to watch it. It dawned on me that there were no flashing lights and the light it emitted was not the white light of a plane or helicopter. However, that could have been due to the light fog, so didn’t think anymore of it as I watched.

At.12:40 a.m., the orb slowed down to a crawl. That was when I saw the second golden orb! It was quickly coming from the same direction as the first one had. I thought, “Oh God, they’re going to crash!” noted the time and ran outside. As you can imagine, I couldn’t take my eyes off of them.

The second orb quickly slowed down to the first orbs speed and they continued east always keeping a space of 4 degrees (if you held your thumbs up together you would see an orb on either side). I was about to go inside (it was cold out there!) when the third orb quickly came in from 25 degrees north.

It too matched speed with the others, but was 6 degrees away from the other two orbs. When the final orb came into position, forming the apex and front (as I was about to find out) of a triangle all the orbs colours reddened noticeably. The whole triangle (or the best synchronized flying I’ve ever seen of 3 independent crafts) turned to 60 degrees northeast and slowly flew away.

I ran in and grabbed my cell phone and snapped 3 useless pictures. Just like the Cambridge lad, I’m hoping someone else managed to get some pictures. By the way, I was drinking tea all night so don’t have the benefit of saying I was drunk at the time :o)

I thought the whole thing was great, I’ve always wanted to see a UFO and 39 minutes into the New Year, I ticked that life goal off of my bucket-list. I’d be very interested in hearing more about this sighting. I’m sure it wasn’t swamp gas :o)

I saw them as well, just before my midnight kiss. They were three lights in a form of a triangle to the left of the fireworks. When I went to look again they were gone.

Hovering Bright Light Seen By Hunter At Cape Breton Nova Scotia

Date:  Mid November 2011
Time:  5:30 a.m.

Number of witnesses: 1
Number of Objects: 1
Shape of Objects: Light.

Full Description of Event/Sighting: It was early morning, approximately 20 minutes before sunrise on Creignish mountain. It was also deer season, so at that time I was making my way to my deer blind.

While sitting in the stand, I eventually noticed a bright light to the east, and since I knew there were no visible structures on my side of the mountain, it must have been a flying object as it was hovering above the outline of the tree's.

I didn't think much of it at first, and continued to scan around the field with peeled eye's and ears in anticipation of a buck, and when I looked back it was gone.

5 Orange Lights Flew Over Waterloo Ontario

Date:  December 24, 2011
Time:  9:15 p.m.

I saw 5 orange lights over Waterloo Ontario Dec/24/11 at 9:15 p.m. They were heading south to north and then turned to the east towards Guelph. I was close enough to see that they were just orange pulsing lights with no structure to them.

Both my wife and I saw them. The first four lights were approximately 300 yards apart and then the fifth light came approximately 1 minute later. They all followed the exact same path.

Beamsville Ontario Witnesses Watch Orange Lights

Date:  December 31, 2011
Time:  Approx: 9:30 p.m.

We did see this in Beamsville, Ontario, but we thought these were meteors. It happened at New Years eve December 31, 2011 after 9:30 p.m. The objects were 3 and the lights faded very soon and they disappeared.

Two were beside each others and one alone.

40 Witnesses To 6 Yellow/Orange Lights Over Barrie Ontario

Date:  January 1, 2012
Time:  Just past midnight.

Number of witnesses: 40
Number of Objects: I believe 6.
Shape of Objects: Star like.

Full Description of Event/Sighting: We had all just watched the New Years Eve fireworks, there was just some smoke in the air, other than that, the sky was clear. We all then noticed these orange/yellow star like objects coming from the right/south side of our waterfront condo balcony.

The first three formed into a perfect triangle, there were three others that followed them in a perfect set distance from each other. They moved without any sound or flashing. Once they were past the downtown point of Barrie, over the lake (Simcoe) they seemed to disappear.

We were all in shock, but some people may have pictures. My whole life as a UFO skeptic, changed this night.

3 Bright Orange Objects/Lights Over Camrose Alberta

Date:  January 1, 2012
Time:  12:25 a.m.

Number of witnesses: 2
Number of Objects: 3
Shape of Objects: Round.

Full Description of Event/Sighting: My husband was outside with our dog shortly after 12:20 a.m. when he saw 2 bright orange objects passing overhead very swiftly, from NW to SE. He called to me to come quickly and I got there just in time to see the second object disappear in the SE.

Then we saw another one overhead traveling in the same direction and watched it until it also disappeared. They were very bright, quiet and definitely not airplanes. Have never seen anything like them.
