UFOs Or Paper Lanterns?

Brian Vike's Favorite Cases.

Newspaper Article.

By Jennifer Lang.

Cloverdale Reporter.

Dozens of Cloverdale residents have recently reported seeing strange lights in the night sky. An explanation may be blowing in the wind.

Was it a practice run for the Mayan calendar prediction? Was it E.T. phoning home?

Or was it a group of illuminated, floating paper lanterns, released into the skies over Cloverdale by some celebrant who got carried away by the spirit of the season?

We may never know for sure, but at least one Cloverdale resident who saw bright, moving lights in the skies on Dec. 22 (“Strange Lights Over Cloverdale,” Jan. 12) believes the sighting was really paper lanterns, which float on the air using candle power.

“That night my sons and I saw nearly 20 of these,” Jonas Lee Photography posted on the Reporter’s

Facebook Page after reading the story.

“We followed one and found where it crashed. It was a metre-diametre Chinese paper lantern! The wind was causing these to blow quite far.”

He didn’t get a photo, however. “The rice paper dissolves quickly,” he wrote, “leaving a wire frame and foam pad that the candle rests in.”

Another local eyewitness concurs with the lantern theory.

“I do believe what you saw was lanterns,” the witness told UFO expert Brian Vike, submitting a report to the Houston, B.C.,-based researcher’s blog, The Vike Factor.

This eyewitness has seen them floating in the skies here on Canada Day and other holidays.

“If you find out who let them go I would sure love to know the story.”

The lantern theorists are among dozens of Cloverdalians who reported seeing unusual lights in the sky on Dec. 22, and over the Christmas holidays as part of a Yuletide flood of UFO reports submitted to The Vike Factor from B.C., the U.S. and elsewhere.

Vike found it curious that there were so many reports coming out of Surrey.

Among the reports was the story of a local man who posted video footage captured after he and his son pulled over on their drive home to watch the strange sight.

The lights – which were silent – didn’t appear to act like aircraft, according to the man who shot the footage. But he’s not yet convinced that what he and others saw that night were lanterns.

In coming forward with his sighting, the man is hoping someone will be able to identify what he – and the other people who stopped their cars along 60 Avenue to watch – saw that night.

“I hope someone has an explanation,” he said.

Since his story was featured in The Reporter, more Cloverdale residents have now reported seeing strange, bright lights over Cloverdale, snapping photos and shooting video, and posting their findings on Facebook pages.

A couple who were up late wrapping presents went out to their backyard after noticing a cluster of strange lights travelling across the sky on Dec. 22.

“It was eerie to say the least, and I wanted to notify someone but thought I would sound like a lunatic,” she said. “I was relieved to see the sighting in the paper yesterday, but it still leaves me with an uneasy feeling.”

Another witness was equally baffled, describing how, a few nights before Christmas, three orange lights could be seen moving very slowly, one at a time, very high in the sky. One seemed to stop, make a 90-degree turn and start moving east.

“I dragged my 17-year-old son outside onto the deck to watch, and he thought they were definitely not airplanes, especially given the extreme right turn they each made.”

Another person was also relieved after reading the story. “Unless you’ve seen them yourself, it really is a bizarre sighting.”

It’s hard not to conclude it’s all really part of a sneaky advertising scheme dedicated to stirring up that all-important buzz for a product.

“Don’t be surprised if your display makes front page news in your local paper!” A website that sells paper lanterns called FlyingLanterns.co.uk gushes. “Flying lanterns can easily be mistaken for UFOs!”

If so, then a lot of people will feel duped.

It’s worth noting the site carries this warning: Please ensure you contact the local coast guard if you intend releasing your lanterns on the beach or near the coast. This will avoid causing unnecessary alarm.

Vike, who’s investigated hundreds of UFO sightings, concedes the strange lights may turn out to be lanterns but he doesn’t expect it will dampen the debate for now.

The time of year – the festive holiday season – may further underscore this theory.

“It would be the time of year that folks would let things like this go, and they are becoming a popular addition to fireworks. I just wish we [could hear from] the folks who know for a fact, the folks who let them go. This would be awesome.”

Strange Lights Over Cloverdale

Brian Vike's Favorite Cases.

Newspaper Article.

By Jennifer Lang.

CloverdaleReporter.

UFO expert says Surreyites saw something unexplained in the skies over Cloverdale this Christmas.

A couple of nights before Christmas Eve a Cloverdale man and his son were driving home along 60 Avenue west from 176 Street in Surrey when they were distracted by some unusual lights in the sky near their house.

The driver pulled over, grabbed his cell phone, and immediately started recording, hoping to capture the strange sight on video.

His Dec. 22 footage – since posted to YouTube – shows several clusters of bright, white lights that appear to change pattern and move against an inky black sky.

“That can’t be planes,” the witness says, his voice tinged with wonder and curiosity.

“Do you see them there?” he continues.

“Some are moving sideways. See that one that was just flashing? What the hell? That’s above our area. This is in Cloverdale,” he remarks incredulously.

It seems there was something unusual over the Surrey skies over the Christmas holidays, but it wasn’t Santa’s sleigh.

As many as nine different eyewitnesses reported seeing strange white and orange lights over Cloverdale between Christmas and New Years Eve, according to B.C.’s premier UFO researcher, Brian Vike.

The Surrey sightings were part of a much larger wave of UFO reports that flooded his email inbox over the Yuletide season.

“All of a sudden, everything started popping up and flying every which way, almost all at once,” he said, adding reports came in from B.C., the U.S., U.K., and even Australia and South Africa.

It’s all fascinating stuff for Vike, an astronomy buff who first began looking into UFO phenomena and other mysteries in 2000.

These days, he runs a blog called The Vike Factor from his home in Houston, B.C., 800 kms northeast of Vancouver, collecting and investigating reports from all over the world.

Normally, most sightings can be explained; stars, planets, aircraft, satellites, and meteors can be all mistaken for UFOs, which he believes was the case with a rash of colourful New Year’s Eve sightings that came in from Arizona, New Mexico and Colorado.

Chinese paper lanterns – which can float high into the sky on the heat of a candle – are increasingly popular among celebrants on holidays and weddings, leading him to caution that a number of the nearly 400 reports he’s sorting through from Dec. 22 to Jan. 8 can probably be explained.

But so far, the veteran UFO chaser is stumped by the Cloverdale sightings. “How do you explain these other orange lights going off in other directions? What the heck is it? We just don’t know.”

He sporadically receives reports from Surrey, but never so many in a short time frame.

“In Surrey, Cloverdale, definitely, that was an influx in sightings for whatever reason,” he said. They include a Dec. 22 report from a jogger who was running along 60 Avenue near 171 Street and saw six orange lights.

More reports followed on New Years Eve, when a group of revelers went outside at midnight with the kids to make noise and light sparklers and all saw orange lights in a line zooming at intervals across the sky.

For now, Vike hasn’t determined what the true explanation may be, but he doubts they were paper lanterns or even weather balloons. “They just don’t fit this sighting.” Maybe the answer lies in the simple fact that people take time off over the holidays, and are traveling at night to socialize.

“They have more time to sit back, they’re more relaxed and have more time to look up. It’s the same when summer time gets here.”

The Cloverdale man who took the Dec. 22 YouTube footage told the Reporter Wednesday he doesn’t think the lights he captured using his cellphone were extra terrestrial in origin.

He doubts they were aircraft of some kind – there was no engine or propeller noise, for example. Plus, the lights appeared quite low in the sky, below a layer of low-lying cloud cover that evening.

“They were too close [to the ground] to be stars,” he said. “It didn’t look like planes.”

The episode lasted about 10 minutes, he said.

At around 9:30 p.m. that evening, dozens of lights appeared in the sky to the north of 60 Avenue near 168 Street and moved south towards Highway 10.

“At first they seemed to be in a line and they were moving,” he said. The lights then slowed and some stopped, setting into motion again once he’d turned on his cell phone camera.

In coming forward with his sighting, the man is hoping someone will be able to identify what he – and the other people who stopped their cars along 60 Avenue to watch – saw that night.

“I hope someone has an explanation.”

Strange Bright Orange/Red Lights Are Seen More Frequent Over Langley Cloverdale Aldergrove British Columbia

Date:  Over the last year (2014)
Time:  Approximately 7:00 p.m. - 7:30 p.m.

Hi, so I have been seeing this over the Langley, British Columbia area for a couple/few years now and they are far more frequent in the last year.

I have seen as many as three at once spanning from Cloverdale to Walnut Grove to Aldergrove and Brookswood. They are about the size of a small school bus, maybe a bit smaller.

They have a panel of front lights that are sometimes steady and sometimes cascading. and sometimes only one center light.

I have watched the lights alter. There's a bright orange/reddish lights on each side and it often goes total stealth blackout.

I have watched these objects move in odd grid like patterns and pivot turn as opposed to banking like a plane or helicopter.

They elevate and descend straight up and down and are silent unless moving up, down or forward.

I have watched them hover/stationary for several minutes at a time. A pattern I have noticed is they come from the south end of Langley around 7:00 p.m.-7:30 p.m.

If anyone has had a UFO/UFOs sighting, please send me an email at sighting@telus.net or fill out the online UFO report form at http://sightings1.yolasite.com/ with details of what you saw.

Please remember to include the date and time and location. (Town/City – State or Province) and as much detail as possible.

Numerous Witnesses Observe Orange/Red Light Over Cloverdale British Columbia

Date:  December 17, 2012
Time:  Around 9:40 p.m. - 9:45 p.m.

Good morning, I and about 6 neighbors witnessed something last night at around 9:40-9:45 Pm. on December 17, 2012.

I only saw the last portion of it, but here is what I witnessed. I stepped out to walk my dog at approximately 9:40 p.m.
As soon as I got out, I noticed a car stopped in the middle of the road to my left a couple houses.

The lady driver had her door open and was looking up and yelling. I thought she was just calling to a neighbour.

I turned right and walked the dog a bit. The dog didn't want to walk, so after maybe 4 minutes, I turned around and started back home, that's when I saw the bright orange/red light pretty much stationary in the sky above and behind the car parked in the middle of the road still.

It was memorizing. The lady saw me and asked if I saw it, another fellow walking a dog said he had seen the light go from basically one horizon, straight overhead, and it was now appeared stopped over a field behind this car.

Fairly high, but I had no reference points. He said it made no sound. I asked if it could be a satellite, he said no, it was way to low for that. I dropped the dog off in the house, got my wife and she witnessed it too.

By now it started moving away from us. We viewed it for a few more minutes until it was behind some clouds.

There were about 6 of us who saw this. One fellow just said "it's evil".

None of us heard any noises like it would be a plane etc. At all times it maintained the same orange/red glow. Very bright.

At first I thought it was an indicator light on a helicopter, but I never saw the green or white that would also be on such. Also, seeing the red only, the helicopter would have to have travelled sideways, and it would have been green approaching us.

Just wondering if there were any other sighting reported for this sighting.

For what it's worth, the direction of travel was approximately SSW to NNE.

If you have seen anything like this in the same area please be kind enough to contact Brian Vike at: sighting@telus.net with the details of your sighting. All personal information is kept confidential.

Tonight at approximately 10:20 p.m. I saw what appears to be the same thing as reported on the post about the December 22nd sighting.

Same area 168th and 64th Ave. My daughter and I were leaving our subdivision and saw a few other people out looking up in the sky. Really odd.

Cluster Of Around 12 Strange Lights Seen Over Cloverdale British Columbia

Date:  December 22, 2011
Time:  Evening.

Brian, on the evening of December 22, 2011 my husband and I were up late wrapping Christmas presents (no we were not drinking either!) when he got up to let our dogs out. He started yelling for me to come outside and "see this".

We stood in our backyard facing south near 64th and 168th Street in Cloverdale and watched a cluster of strange lights travel across the sky. I could see at least a dozen at one point. They came from the east and slowly moved west.

We watched them for two or three minutes. The clouds were low lying that evening, so we knew that whatever was in the sky was flying low, but strangely enough we heard nothing. There was silence.

We live close to the flight path and frequently hear planes on their way to and from YVR, even when we cannot see the lights of those aircraft, we can hear them.
The lights were too close together to be planes or helicopters. It was eerie to say the least and I wanted to notify someone, but thought I would sound like a lunatic to the authorities. It was strange enough for me to tell a few people to the next day, but no one I spoke with had seen it.

If I had been alone I would have thought I had been seeing things. I was relieved to see the sighting in the paper yesterday, but it still leaves me with an uneasy feeling. Up until that night, I would not have believed in UFO's, but I feel nothing else describes it.

My husband has suggested that it was a practice run for next years Mayan Calendar prediction. I guess only time will tell.
A Cloverdale BC Resident.

Two Sightings Of Orange Lights Flying Through The Sky Over Cloverdale British Columbia

Date:  November 20, 2011 and again on December 22, 2011
Time: Approx: 8:00 p.m.

Hi Brian, just read the report in the Cloverdale Reporter about "Strange lights over Cloverdale". I experienced a similar thing on November 20, 2011 (scrolled back on my Facebook page to see the date). I was walking alongside the Cloverdale Athletic Park at about 8:00 p.m. when a truck pulled over and a man jumped out shouting "look at that" and pointing west.

I turned around and saw 4 orange lights in a diamond formation moving slowly across the sky. In the meantime, the man's teenage daughter got out and watched and another truck pulled over with 2 more people in it. So 5 of us all saw the same thing for a couple of minutes.

All of a sudden the lights, one by one, disappeared like someone had just flicked a switch off. I posted it on my Facebook page and heard from another Cloverdale resident that her son's friend said he saw the same thing and had pictures.

I asked for the pictures but never received them.

Then on December 22, 2011 my 19 year old son and his girlfriend came charging into the house shouting that they had just seen the same thing I had. Then my husband came in and said he saw the same thing as did several of our neighbors who were also outside that evening.

I don't know how much information you want, but wanted to pass on the basic information. Please feel free to contact me if you need any more information. Thank you.

Orange Lights Seen On Three Different Occasions From Eyewitnesses Home At Cloverdale British Columbia (Pictures)

Date:  November 20, 2011 and December 22 and December 31, 2011
Time:  Approx: 8:00 p.m.

Hi, we saw the orange lights over our home in Cloverdale on November 20, December 22, and December 31, 2011. The first sightings were about 8:00 p.m. when I went outside to mail some mail into the mailboxes beside our home.

There were about 7 of them and flying really close together. I first thought planes but these were flying too close together and moving erratically. I ran inside to get my husband and son and they couldn't believe their eyes.

By the time I ran to grab my camera (the battery was not in it, the scan card wasn't in it, etc.,) the lights were seen just barely, but I got a photo of 2 of them as they vanished over the horizon.

The lights were travelling east to west and were flying in the same direction on the 22nd of December.

My husband and I were walking across the street to visit and he became speechless and started pointing up to the sky.

There were about 13 of them this time and he did video them.

The kids were all outside for New Years eve and they saw the lights on that evening and told the adults. The adults at the party couldn't believe their eyes either.

So, we have seen them 3 times in 2 months flying over Cloverdale and they were really bright orange, and flying in the same direction and looked the same.
I will attach a photo from the 20th of November.

The first photo, 0432, is a blown up photo as I photo zoomed in on it to get a better look. We also have video from December 22 that my husband took.

Has been very interesting and a mystery to our family for a while now. We were relieved to see the report in our local paper as a lot of people haven't seen these lights and unless you've seen them yourself, it is really a bizarre sighting.

24 White Orange Lights Filmed Over Cloverdale British Columbia (Excellent Video Footage)

Date:  December 22, 2011
Time:  Approx: 9:30 p.m.

At about 930 pm I was at 176 and 60th avenue with my son on Thursday December 22, 2011. We where heading back home going down 60 avenue to 168 avenue from 176 street. When we got to 60 avenue and 169 street, we noticed a bunch of light up in the sky above the area where our house is.

My son pulled out his cell phone and was trying to record it, but his phone did not get anything. We pulled over to the side of the road around 169 and 60 and other cars also pulled over and where watching what was happening

I pulled my cell phone out and tried to capture what was happening. There seemed to be about 24 lights in the sky a few to the left around highway 10 and bunch straight down 60 avenue and a few above and around 61 avenue.

Some seemed to be moving  and fading away, the rest just faded away, but did not seem to be moving. There was some fog or cloud in the sky which took away some of the light. Some of the lights were spaced out in different areas of the sky.

My cell phone did not pick up some of the lights that were in the sky, and also did not pick up my sons voice. Also the lights appeared white in the video, but some of the lights where orange, white color.

I was holding the cell phone in my left hand near the drivers window with the window down and my hand outside the window. The bottom shows the street lights as well as the sign from the corner stores at 168 and 60 avenue.

I am not sure what it was, but there was lots of them in the sky. I posted the video on YouTube with the below title: Cloverdale BC-strange lights in sky Dec 22, 2011 or visit the link below.

Take a look and please and let me know if you find any more information about what happed that night.

Total Of Ten Round Orange Objects Over Cloverdale (In Surrey) British Columbia

Date:  December 22, 2011
Time:  9:45 p.m.

Number of witnesses: 4
Number of Objects: I saw 6 but my neighbors saw 10.
Shape of Objects: Round and orange.

Full Description of Event/Sighting: I was out for a run and was heading west on 61A Ave., from 176th Street when I saw 2 orange lights west and a bit south of me. I couldn't always see them as I ran because there were tall trees blocking my view.

When I ran onto 60th Ave., and turned north onto 171A Street I could then see 6 orange lights still to the west of my position. They were mostly stationary, but moving a little bit. When the lights moved they didn't move all at the same time, they were kind of meandering around.

I had stopped to watch where a couple of my neighbors were also watching. They told me they had originally seen 10 lights all in a straight line streak across the sky from north to south ("faster than you could shoot a bullet") and then stop in their current position.

The lights were just below a thin cloud cover and were maybe about 1/8th the size of the moon. As we watched the lights started to fade away one at a time. I decided to run home and get my camcorder and tell my family about the lights.

By the time I got home there was only one light left (which my son saw) and by the time I brought out my camcorder that last light had faded away. From my first sighting until the last light disappeared was about 10 minutes.

Cloverdale British Columbia Silver UFO With Rows Of Portholes

Posted: September 26, 2008

Date: Approx: 2003
Time: Approx: 1:00 p.m.

Message: Hi Brian Hope that your back is better. Oh where can I start, my husband and I are or we prefer to be called young seniors. We have seen a lot of sightings over our life when we took the kids camping in remote areas around B.C. We saw lights that would shine around the mountain tops, dart around with no sound. So we knew that they were not helicopters or car lights. Some times they would be white lights, sometimes they were red and they would be in a straight line then they would shot straight up at a very rapid speed then disappear. We knew back then that there was something going on, but we kept quite about it because no one ever spoke about such things then.

The most shocking one I ever saw was over Cloverdale B.C. about five years ago in broad daylight around 1:00 in the afternoon going south on 176st. I happened to look up to the west and saw a glint of silver in the sky. It was a large craft. I could see many rows of port holes and there was a gold line around the middle. I asked my husband if he could see it. Of course he could not slam on the brakes as we were in traffic. When I looked back, it was in the clouds. I kept watching, but I could not see it any more. We believe that these crafts and beings are interdementional and they cannot be detected on radar and can disappear at will. It is all very interesting.

Thank you to the witness for their report.
