At 10:30am on January 24, 2011 I received a reply by way of telephone from the Canadian Coast Guard. They confirmed that a Paraglider had crashed and there was a rescue underway. It was illumination flares that a lot of folks saw that evening. Brian Vike – The Vike Factor.

Below are the sighting reports I received for the January 2011 British Columbia strange light sightings. We know now that flares were dropped from an aircraft to illuminate for searchers.

Two Star Like Objects And Jet Aircraft Over Calgary Alberta

Date: January 23, 2011
Time: 6:30 p.m.

Location of Sighting: Calgary Alberta
Number of witnesses: 1
Number of Objects: 2
Shape of Objects: Round ?

Full Description of Event/Sighting: I stepped out side my house for a smoke. Looking in the northern sky, I saw a small fast moving jet travelling from the north going south. I turned, looked south and noticed two stars. At about 40 degrees above horizon. The lower one was brighter than the top one. I thought it was Jupiter.

The top "star" got very bright, then dimmed and then the bottom "star" did the same. Both brightened to a very strong white light. Just before the jet reached there position, the top one blinked out and then the bottom one. WX at the time is clear many stars visible No wind, Temp.- 3 C and the length of time was 2 minutes.

Bright Yellow/Orange Colored Light Over Central Elgin County Ontario

Date: January 21, 2011
Time: Between 11:00 p.m. and 12:00 midnight.

Dear Mr. Vike, I found your site when I did an internet search to learn there were any other reports of something that I saw in the north-northeast sky between 11:00 p.m. and 12:00 midnight on Friday, January 21, 2011.

As I entered our bedroom to go to bed between 11:00pm and midnight, January 21, 2011, I saw a very bright yellow-orange colored light that appeared to be pulsating well above the tree-line of the horizon in the north-northeast sky, in the southern part of Central Elgin, in Elgin County, Ontario, Canada, approximately 3-4 km north of Lake Erie's north shoreline near Port Bruce.

The light was much brighter and some of the stars or planets that stand out from other stars, and it seemed much too brilliant and different than any airplane that one regularly sees in the evening night. It looked like it was pulsating, but it could have been multiple lights blurred together to look like a pulse, because it appeared quite distant from our location, perhaps more than 2 kms.

I stood looking at this light for about 15 to 20 seconds and was about to awaken my wife to look, but the light completely disappeared in an instant. It looked like it 'burned out'. I was in disbelief and I woke my wife up right away and told her what I'd just seen. This was not a meteor of any sort. I have seen many meteors of many sizes and speeds.

This object appeared stationary. There was no obstruction in the sky where I had seen that pulsating light, which might have explained its disappearance, as sometimes air craft flying directly away can cross obstructions such as trees that block one's view. As I said, this light was well above the horizon and tree-line and the sky was completely clear and there were no clouds at all.

I have not seen anything like this before, and I have to say that I feel awkward sending a message to a person like you who I only discovered via a quick web search for possible similar sightings.

I have not been able to find any online reports of a similar sighting in this area on that date. This is what I saw and I cannot explain it.

Have you heard of any other similar sightings from this area or elsewhere even remotely similar to what I saw? Please let me know what you think. Thanks and regards.

Bright Glowing Balls Of Light Looked Like A Bonfire Over Chemainus British Columbia

Date: January 22, 2011
Time: Approx: 7:00 p.m.

I saw the light you are talking about, but it happened 3 times. I also saw a red light circling around the 3 bright light. No sound. Looked like a bonfire in the sky.

Additional Information:

Hi Brian, so glad you are following through on this kind of stuff. I live in Victoria, and was visiting my friend who lives on (street name removed) Street in Chemainus (across from the Elementary School). The lights were due south, above the tree line of the Elementary School, very close and visible.

I saw one glowing ball, like a bonfire in the sky. It lit up the clouds around it, or the clouds were smoke coming from the fire. It glowed for about 4 minuets then just slowly faded. Another light just like it lit up about a minute later, about 100 metres from the first one.

Same thing, like a bonfire in the sky for about 4 minutes, then it faded. About a minute passed and a third light lit up the sky, about 100 metres from where the second light was. This time, though, I noticed a red light circling around the flaming ball, like it was monitoring it. I thought, is that an airplane, but when I went outside, there was no sound.

Just a circling red light around a bonfire in the sky. Then, the third light slowly extinguished.

Would love to hear what you find out. I can't believe more people didn't see it. It was so bright!

Bright Orange Ball Of Light Looked Like Flames Hanging In The Sky Over Ladysmith British Columbia

Date: January 22, 2011
Time: Approx: 7:00 p.m.

(Vike Factor Note) I have received a number of reports on this sighting of a orange ball of light over a part of Vancouver Island here in British Columbia. Trying to figure it out and come up with an answer for the folks who sent reports in.

Hi Brian, I saw your other postings on the orange ball near Ladysmith and thought I'd share ours. We were driving down to Victoria from Nanaimo at around 7:00pm on January 22rd, 2011, along the Trans Canada highway when we saw a bright orange light that looked to me to be flames hanging in the sky. We were close to the Nanaimo airport at the time, so initially we thought it was a plane making an emergency landing that was on fire.

It seemed to move across the sky west to east. It was very bright and orange. There also seemed to be some flashes on the clouds above. We drove on and it was intermittently disappearing and than lighting up again. We've done some digging around and we found out there is a type of flare that releases a small parachute that slowly carries it down, so this would probably make sense, including the flashes on the clouds above when it dropped to the cloud.

There was also something about a paraglider rescue at the time. Can you confirm this? Anyways, I took a short video of it with my camera before the battery died, but its 200mb, so I can't send it to you. Looks like a round ball of light in the video.

Unusual Bright Horizontal Orange Line In The Sky Over Gatineau South Quebec Canada

Date: January 22, 2011
Time: 6:45 p.m.

Location of Sighting: Gatineau South Quebec Canada.
Number of witnesses: 2
Number of Objects: 1
Shape of Objects: Horizontal line.

Full Description of Event/Sighting: I was with my boyfriend in the car, when he turned around and saw a bright orange line. It was a horizontal line and it was also brighter in the middle and a little wider. It was obviously not a contrail or a shooting stars. It stayed there for a couple minutes from the moment when we saw it.

We watched it for 3 minutes and then it slowly dissipated, after slowly regained it’s brightness for another couple minutes and then dissipated until it completely disappeared. It was a cloudy night with almost no stars and we couldn't see the moon, only this thing. We also saw two similar white lights, but they were alot smaller and alot dimmer. When the orange light disappeared 2 minutes after, they started to disappear as well.
