UFO Spotted Over Haro Strait Near Victoria British Columbia (Sighting Solved)

Date: September 8 2010
Time: 4:45 p.m.

Location of Sighting: Haro Strait Near Victoria British Columbia.
Number of witnesses: 3
Number of Objects: 1
Shape of Objects: Cigar shaped.

Full Description of Event/Sighting: My husband, mother-in-law and I were at a viewpoint on top of Mt Tolmie in Victoria. The sky behind us to the west was solid black thunder clouds, but to the east over the water the sky was clear. My husband was the first to see, in the east, what looked like a very large jet liner that was stationary in the sky. His comment was "That plane sure isn't moving very fast." He was right.

The object was bright white with no visible markings and was sitting completely still. If it was actually the size of a jet, it appeared to be about five or six miles away. If it was something else, the distance was difficult to judge as we did not know its size. We do know it was over the water. Although it was near the flight path from Victoria to Seattle and it was a bit lower than the planes usually are.

We've seen enough large planes to know that at a certain angle they can look like a long tube as the wings appear superimposed on the body of the plane. We took that into consideration. We also know that a plane flying directly towards or away can look like it is not moving. However in this case neither scenario seemed correct. It definitely looked like we were seeing the side of the object.

In that case it should have been moving. If it were coming right at us, or going away, it should have become larger or smaller. Actually, if we were seeing just the end of the "plane" that would have meant it was immense! None of that happened. It stayed exactly the same. After several minutes it suddenly seemed to shrink then fade away, although it did not change its position. Just as suddenly it reappeared a few seconds later in the very same place, in it's original size, shape and again a bright white.

After a few more minutes it started to move very slowly in a southerly direction towards the Straits of Juan de Fuca. I've never seen a plane fly that slowly and stay in the air! We discussed the possibility of it being a balloon or strangely shaped kite. We eliminated the kite idea as there was no wind on the water, in the trees far below us or on the mountain top. In fact it was unusually still. If it was some sort of tethered balloon it had an incredibly long string and at some point became loose.

However if it had been tethered then broken free it would be surprising that it managed to maintain a course that did not wander or deviate at all. We watched it for about 10 minutes. I wanted to follow it along the waterfront below and try to find, but we had to get my mother-in-law home. So, after much consideration, I decided to pass on the information to you as it really was an "Unidentified Flying Object". Perhaps some others saw it that afternoon and can give a better description or better still an explanation.

Additional Information: Sighting Solved.

Hello Brian- The UFO that you report seeing on September 8th, was a zeppelin (dirigible) that was contracted through Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute in collaboration with the NOAA Marine Fisheries Service in Seattle and the Center for Whale Research on San Juan Island to take aerial photographs of killer whales. I was aboard the vessel and we did hover over an area of Haro Strait on the west side of San Juan Island called False Bay for approximately 45 minutes between 4 and 5 p.m. I will be posting a more in-depth article about the mission this afternoon. I would be happy to send you a link to the article once it is posted.

Brian Vike's Note: Thank you to the person who emailed me to say it was them inside of a Zeppelin (dirigible) which was the cause for the sighting.
If you have seen anything like this in the same area please be kind enough to contact Brian Vike at: sighting@telus.net with the details of your sighting. All personal information is kept confidential.

Thin Curved UFO Over Victoria British Columbia

Date: March 18, 2010
Time: 7:15 p.m.

Location of Sighting: Victoria.
Number of witnesses: 2
Number of Objects: 1
Shape of Objects: Thin curved structure.

Full Description of Event/Sighting: I was in the passenger seat of my friends car when driving in downtown Victoria. I looked out over the inner harbor and in the sky in there was what I thought to be a flying V of geese in at a weird angle, but I kept looking and they weren't moving. It looked to be about a km away from me, but not too high up in the sky.

I saw a few pedestrians pointing at it, but the majority of people were not looking. It was black and looked like it was in somewhat of a V shape. I saw it between buildings for a total of about 2 minutes. But after we parked and tried to look closer, it was gone. No clue what it was!

Victoria British Columbia Canada Oval UFO With Portholes

Posted: June 14, 2009

Date: Summer 1963
Time: N/A.

Number of witnesses: 4
Number of objects: 1
Shape of objects: Oval

Hello, (referring to Victoria B.C. Summer of 1963 sighting - http://www.ufoinfo.com/sightings/canada/630000.shtml) I have been trying for years to locate any article or info on this sighting. It must be the same one. I know it was summer but the year I'm not sure but your article sounds like around the same time.
There were 4 of us on our front porch of our house when this object just floated across to the right of us (I would guest just above a telephone pole, maybe 50 ft).

It appeared oval and had portholes ( 3-4 I believe ) and no sound. The object stopped and it appeared 2 figures came to the portholes and looked out. We could only see black outlines of them and we were amazed and waved at them yelling greetings and give us a ride.

The incident may have lasted for approximately 1-2 minutes and then the figures went from the portholes and it just floated away and then just took off at an unbelievable speed and it was gone going south and whoosh it was gone.

We did tell our parents but they thought we were pulling their leg but the next day it was in the paper ( I should have kept it ). I have tried finding the article in our local paper, but to know avail. Anyway that's what we saw, totally amazing.

Thank you to UFOINFO for this report. http://www.ufoinfo.com/

Victoria, Vancouver Island British Columbia A Large Silver/Gray Object

Posted: August 20, 2008

Date: August 10, 2008
Time: 3:00 p.m.

Location of Sighting: Victoria, B.C.
Number of witnesses: 2
Number of objects: 1
Shape of objects: Round.

Full Description of event/sighting: Hi Brian, Like many of the people who visit your website I spend time looking at the sky. I too have seen the blimps, weather balloons, flares, fireworks, kites, and lanterns. I also enjoy the couple of very bright stars that flash red, blue, yellow and silver. The winter one is particularly lovely. I watch for the exceptionally bright satellite that appears to be very low in the sky that crosses between 10:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. most nights. I see the fast high flying jets that show only a strobe light as they dart past.

I've also seen a few things that can't be explained as easily. One happened about a week ago when my husband glanced out the window and said "What is that?" So of course I looked. It was a large silver/gray perfectly round object moving very rapidly from the south (Oak Bay area). The speed did not vary and appeared to be slightly faster than the small sea planes that go along that route. The part facing the sun was a dull silver and the rest appeared light gray. I had the impression that it had a few dark lines or some sort of pattern on it as well.

We live near the water and it appeared to be just off shore over the Haro Strait. I'm not sure of the height but it was well above the trees between us and the water. Not knowing what it was made it difficult to determine if it was small object close by or a large object far away. We wondered if it was some sort of balloon only because there were no obvious signs of locomotion but it was moving in a very direct line, not the way a balloon would wander in the wind. In fact there was no wind at all at tree level but I acknowledge that there could have been a steady wind at a higher altitude. There was no way to know. The sky was cloudless. We watched it for probably less than a minute before it disappeared to the north behind some trees, towards the town of Sidney

So what was it? I'm very sure it was not a helium balloon that escaped from a child or a party. The size, shape and even the colour were wrong. We've all seen drifting helium balloons and it did not look at all like one of those. Weather balloon? Not likely. They tend to go up, not travel a few hundred feet parallel to the ground in an unwavering line. Plus no obvious instruments were attached. So I am wondering, did anyone else see this object and have a better view of it? We are quite willing to agree it was likely an ordinary man made "thing" that we might have recognized from a different perspective. My husband just shrugged it off and went back to his book but I would like to know just what it was. Any ideas.

Hope your back is not giving you too much grief these days. Take care.

Thank you to the witness for their report.

Victoria, British Columbia Witnesses See What They Believed To be A UFO

Posted: June 4, 2008

Date: May 28, 2008
Time: Approx: 11:00 p.m.

Location of Sighting: Parking lot of Craigdaroch Castle in Victoria, BC.
Number of witnesses: 2
Number of objects: 1
Shape of objects: Like a very bright satellite.

Full Description of event/sighting: It was a cold night on May 28, 2008, at approx. 2300 hrs, as I, my sister, my mother, and our friend stood outside the Craigdaroch Castle, listening to the stories of the security guard on duty. Story time was just finishing up, so I looked up to take one last look at the beautiful piece of architecture that stood before me. An unusually bright star caught my attention just to the left of the building. At a closer glance the star appeared to be moving slightly, so I assumed that it nothing more than an exceptionally bright satellite.

So I turned back to hear the rest of the never-ending tale of our new friend. Just then, my sister, who was also looking up at the sky at the same time, said, "hey, where did that light go?" Someone said, "what light?" to which she replied, "the satellite that I was watching just disappeared" I said, "say what?" I looked back to the spot where I last saw this "satellite", and sure enough, it had vanished! I looked all over the night sky and saw no sign of anything moving! I am convinced that what both me and my sister saw was, in fact, a UFO!

Now, whether it was of alien origin, or one of the government's test objects, that is up for debate.

Thank you to the witness for their report.

Victoria, British Columbia A Large Oval Shaped UFO (Lights Or Windows)

Posted: April 27, 2008

Date: 1963
Time: Evening.

Location of Sighting: Victoria, B.C.
Number of witnesses: 4
Number of objects: 1
Shape of objects: Circular with row of lights.

Full Description of event/sighting: Hi Brian

In 1963 I lived with my parents and brothers in Victoria. For those who know the area, we were just to the north of Mt Tolmie , near the University of Victoria. That area, with the exception of the solitary mountain, is flat with lots of visible sky.

This event took place early on a quiet summer evening. After dinner mother had walked a few blocks to visit a friend. My younger brother and I were the only two at home. He was 13 at the time. The sky was clear, there was no wind and the sun had just set so it was still light, probably around 8:30 or 9:00 P.M. My brother decided to also walk to the house where mom was visiting. I think he was motivated by her baking. She always had cookies for him when ever he visited.

I was having a peaceful evening at home when the phone rang. It was my mother calling from her friend's house. She quickly told me to go outside and look south toward the mountain. I rushed to the window just in time to see a large oval shape disappear over the mountain top. By the time I actually focused on it, it was gone.

Apparently as my brother was walking to meet mom, he saw a large oval shaped silver object quickly coming from the north. It was similar in shape to a blimp but much larger. With a outward curve in the center on the top and bottom it resembled two soup plates joined at the rims. It also had a row of lights or windows that appeared to encircle the middle where the rims would have met (if it had been two soup bowls). It was at an altitude of maybe 500 feet. It was definitely low enough that it did not reflect the recently set sun. There was no sound and it was moving slightly faster than a small plane.

He wasn't sure if he should run home and tell me or keep going and tell mom. Being a bit closer to mom's friend's house he kept going and burst in the kitchen door telling them to come outside. They did. Mom took one look and rushed back in to call me. Although her viewing was very brief she described the object the same as my brother did. So did her friend. It was in sight for probably a total of five minutes. That would be the length of time for my brother to run a block, show mom and then for mom to phone me and for me to look out the window.

That was all any of us saw. If anybody else did as well, we never heard. We also never heard that any kind of blimp was in the area and in those days that would have been a news item. It is even today.

Oddly, my brother now has very little memory of what he saw. He is even a bit uncomfortable talking about it which is quite out of character. He is a little confused by that as am I. It was quite an event at the time.

Perhaps this will jog the memory of anybody else who might have seen what we did. I could be out a year on the date but I think I'm correct on that.

Thank you to the witness for the excellent report.

Victoria, British Columbia A Narrow Very Bright Blue Beam Of Light

Posted: April 26, 2008

Date: 1968
Time: Evening.

Location of Sighting: Victoria, B.C.
Number of witnesses: 1
Number of objects: 1
Shape of objects: Unknown.

Full Description of event/sighting: Hi Brian

This is in response to your request for UFO sightings on Vancouver Island. I know of only three and I sent you one of them about a week ago. That was about the three daylight "stars" my dad saw in Alert Bay in 1924.

The next one I will tell you about took place in 1968 or 69. It happened to a girl who became my best friend. Actually you've already met her in another story. She was the lady who was camping with her husband in Ontario when her dogs and her husband saw the lady floating across the campground!

At the time of this event I'd not known her for very long. We were both taking a medical training course at the Jubilee Hospital and had just met. However we had become instant friends. Eventually we became roommates.

One morning she came to work and seemed tired and a bit distracted. During lunch she told me a strange story. At this time she was living on her own and boarding at two houses across the street from each other. In one house she had a bedroom and the other is where she had all her meals. It was an odd arrangement but seemed to work for everyone. This was in the Rockland area, not far from the hospital.

She told me that during the night she awoke feeling very frightened. She sensed that something was in her basement bedroom with her. Her first thought was that she must have been dreaming and this was just a residual feeling, but it wasn't going away. It was getting stronger. She knew she had to get out of there. She had to get away from the house and hide. A place of refuge might be the house across the street where she had her meals, so she grabbed the house key, dashed down the hallway and out the basement door. As soon as she got a little way from the door a bright blue beam of light appeared at the edge of the yard. It was coming from the sky and although she could not bring herself to look up to see where it was coming from, it felt quite close. It was like a searchlight beam, very narrow, very bright and very blue. There was no sound and the night was completely still. As the light came closer to her she ran around the corner of the house. The blue light followed. All she knew was she must not let the blue light touch her. She tried to hide but the blue light kept coming closer. She wanted to run to the house across the street but was terrified of being out in the open.

Then she stopped talking. I asked her what happened next. She quietly said "I don't know". I asked where she had woken in the morning but she didn't remember. I asked if she had breakfast at the other house and she assumed she must have. All she remembers is trying to hide from the bright blue light and then nothing until arriving at work.

We talked about it for a while, trying to understand what had happened. It obviously was not a helicopter as there was absolutely no sound. And anyway, why would a helicopter (with blue lights) be chasing her around the yard in the middle of the night in a residential area. We tentatively went to the topic of flying saucers (as they were then called). We really didn't want to go there! We rejected that idea because of the blue light. We didn't know much about them but we'd never heard of any with a blue light. Eventually we reluctantly settled on a very vivid, unusual nightmare. That was OK with her. She didn't really want to believe that what had happened was real!

Over the next few days she seemed less upset and we didn't talk about it any more. Then a couple of months later I happened across a UFO report that talked of a narrow bright blue beams of light, exactly as she had described! That immediately brought back the flying saucer possibility. After all, it was the blue light that had made us reject the idea originally.

Was it a UFO, hallucination (she did not drink or do drugs) or a strange dream ? She doesn't know, but even after all these years she remembers it very well. We still talk about it sometimes and wonder.

Hope this is a bit of what you are looking for, Brian. If it is and if I have some time later I will tell you of the third UFO event that I am aware of in this area.

Thank you to the witness for their report.
