I had typed "meteorites over Nanaimo, BC" in Google to see if anyone has reported seeing them recently. I found this article by a Nanaimo couple who saw something similar to what I've seen, with your contact info at the bottom.
I live at the south end of Nanaimo, and tonight was the fourth time I've seen a "fireball" in the night sky in the last couple of months. The one I saw tonight was at approximately 10:00pm, as I was outside having a smoke.
All four of the sightings were in the same area of the sky (to the right and below the Big Dipper), and all but one (which was traveling South/West) was traveling in a North/North East direction. Each sighting has lasted approximately 3 seconds. They appear as a yellow/orange glow, quite large, about the size of an eraser on a pencil at arms length. Sometimes I've seen a tail, but tonight I didn't. It is very cold and clear out tonight. The objects travel at a high rate of speed, and the three I saw that were traveling North disappeared at almost the same place in the sky, not far from where I first saw them. They seem to travel straight and then shoot up very quickly before they disappear.
Could these be meteorites that I'm seeing? They are definitely not planes, and way to low for satellites.
I would be very interested in hearing what you have to say on these occurrences, and if you have had similar reports recently from others living in the area. Sincerely.
Thank you to the witness for reporting what was observed.
