UFOs Or Paper Lanterns?

Brian Vike's Favorite Cases.

Newspaper Article.

By Jennifer Lang.

Cloverdale Reporter.

Dozens of Cloverdale residents have recently reported seeing strange lights in the night sky. An explanation may be blowing in the wind.

Was it a practice run for the Mayan calendar prediction? Was it E.T. phoning home?

Or was it a group of illuminated, floating paper lanterns, released into the skies over Cloverdale by some celebrant who got carried away by the spirit of the season?

We may never know for sure, but at least one Cloverdale resident who saw bright, moving lights in the skies on Dec. 22 (“Strange Lights Over Cloverdale,” Jan. 12) believes the sighting was really paper lanterns, which float on the air using candle power.

“That night my sons and I saw nearly 20 of these,” Jonas Lee Photography posted on the Reporter’s

Facebook Page after reading the story.

“We followed one and found where it crashed. It was a metre-diametre Chinese paper lantern! The wind was causing these to blow quite far.”

He didn’t get a photo, however. “The rice paper dissolves quickly,” he wrote, “leaving a wire frame and foam pad that the candle rests in.”

Another local eyewitness concurs with the lantern theory.

“I do believe what you saw was lanterns,” the witness told UFO expert Brian Vike, submitting a report to the Houston, B.C.,-based researcher’s blog, The Vike Factor.

This eyewitness has seen them floating in the skies here on Canada Day and other holidays.

“If you find out who let them go I would sure love to know the story.”

The lantern theorists are among dozens of Cloverdalians who reported seeing unusual lights in the sky on Dec. 22, and over the Christmas holidays as part of a Yuletide flood of UFO reports submitted to The Vike Factor from B.C., the U.S. and elsewhere.

Vike found it curious that there were so many reports coming out of Surrey.

Among the reports was the story of a local man who posted video footage captured after he and his son pulled over on their drive home to watch the strange sight.

The lights – which were silent – didn’t appear to act like aircraft, according to the man who shot the footage. But he’s not yet convinced that what he and others saw that night were lanterns.

In coming forward with his sighting, the man is hoping someone will be able to identify what he – and the other people who stopped their cars along 60 Avenue to watch – saw that night.

“I hope someone has an explanation,” he said.

Since his story was featured in The Reporter, more Cloverdale residents have now reported seeing strange, bright lights over Cloverdale, snapping photos and shooting video, and posting their findings on Facebook pages.

A couple who were up late wrapping presents went out to their backyard after noticing a cluster of strange lights travelling across the sky on Dec. 22.

“It was eerie to say the least, and I wanted to notify someone but thought I would sound like a lunatic,” she said. “I was relieved to see the sighting in the paper yesterday, but it still leaves me with an uneasy feeling.”

Another witness was equally baffled, describing how, a few nights before Christmas, three orange lights could be seen moving very slowly, one at a time, very high in the sky. One seemed to stop, make a 90-degree turn and start moving east.

“I dragged my 17-year-old son outside onto the deck to watch, and he thought they were definitely not airplanes, especially given the extreme right turn they each made.”

Another person was also relieved after reading the story. “Unless you’ve seen them yourself, it really is a bizarre sighting.”

It’s hard not to conclude it’s all really part of a sneaky advertising scheme dedicated to stirring up that all-important buzz for a product.

“Don’t be surprised if your display makes front page news in your local paper!” A website that sells paper lanterns called FlyingLanterns.co.uk gushes. “Flying lanterns can easily be mistaken for UFOs!”

If so, then a lot of people will feel duped.

It’s worth noting the site carries this warning: Please ensure you contact the local coast guard if you intend releasing your lanterns on the beach or near the coast. This will avoid causing unnecessary alarm.

Vike, who’s investigated hundreds of UFO sightings, concedes the strange lights may turn out to be lanterns but he doesn’t expect it will dampen the debate for now.

The time of year – the festive holiday season – may further underscore this theory.

“It would be the time of year that folks would let things like this go, and they are becoming a popular addition to fireworks. I just wish we [could hear from] the folks who know for a fact, the folks who let them go. This would be awesome.”

Wellington West Palm Beach UFO Sightings Were Probably Floating Lanterns Expert Says

Brian Vike's Favorite Cases.

Newspaper Article.

By Mitra Malek

Posted Jan 3, 2011 at 12:01 AM

Updated Mar 31, 2012 at 8:46 AM

Glowing orange and red lights floated across parts of Florida’s sky New Year’s weekend, including in the Wellington and West Palm Beach areas, setting off a state of wonderment among witnesses.

But those UFOs weren’t so unidentified after all.

The drifting bulbs and streaks were probably floating lanterns, said Brian Vike, founder of the paranormal blog The Vike Factor, which fielded about 250 e-mails, 30 or so from Florida, noting the strange sightings worldwide.

“They’re all lit up and glowing,” Vike said. “They’ll go up and down and sideways, so it looks pretty weird.”

A woman and her fiancé saw two “red orange” lights float over them while taking a walk in Wellington around 6:55 p.m. Jan. 1, the blog showed.

A West Palm Beach resident saw four red lights “spread equally apart coming in from the south heading north” at about 10:30 p.m. on New Year’s Eve,, according to the blog.

Wellington resident Carol Coleman spotted a “reddish-orangish-yellowish” glow at perhaps 9:30 p.m. Jan. 1, but didn’t think much of it other than noting it was “strange.”

“It reminded me of the tails of the fireworks,” said Coleman, who didn’t write to The Vike Factor.

Massachusetts resident Brian Milne and his wife spotted similar floating orbs of red on New Year’s Eve in Fort Myers. The couple had a pretty good idea of what flew slowly above because they have set off paper lanterns in Cape Cod.

“If you don’t know what the thing is, you’re going to think it’s a UFO,” Milne said. “A couple of them up there gives it an eerie feel.”

The lanterns are often made of a flame-retardant paper, similar to a paper bag. In the opening, which faces the ground, a wire frame holds a candle. The flame heats the inside of the paper, making it glow like a lantern. The heat causes the lantern to rise, like a tiny hot air balloon, up to about 500 feet, Milne said.

When the flame dies and the bag cools, it floats back down.

Vike said he’s fairly certain people spotted floating lanterns over the weekend. In fact, many wrote to him later confirming it.

“There’s some good stuff out there that you can’t explain, but this is probably” the lanterns, Vike said.

Over Twelve Orange Lights Over Lebanon Indiana (Chinese Lanterns)

Brian Vike's Favorite Cases.

Date:  October 1, 2011

Time:  Approxamtlty 8:30 p.m.

I personally viewed the lights over Lebanon, in where I live on the west side. My daughter, her friend, myself and my ex-wife all witnessed over twelve lights.

They flickered like candles, orange, and ascended slowly moving from north to south basically. I watched them dim and burnout. My assessment was either a celebration where people released Asian lanterns, rice paper bags with candles, or it was a hoax with the same lanterns.

My eyes as well as the girls saw flickering like a flame. A small flame. I respect MUFON and other observers of phenomena, but this one I believe was easily explainable. They didn't ever move in any other direction, their speed was determined by the speed of the wind, and they burned out as such.

They did at one point have a triangle of five of them as geese flying south but that seemed just coincidental. I posted my finding on Facebook almost immediately. I truly wished I had seen UFO's but not today.

Thank you to the witness for the report.

Number of witnesses: 1

Number of Objects: 1

Shape of Objects: Bright red ball with fire underneath, moving to the gulf slow, but direct.

Full Description of Event/Sighting: The object made a slight sound and I looked up over my head and saw the bright red ball with fire under it.

I watched it move towards the gulf. I called the police, not any other reports. This was very strange it was not a weather balloon.

25-30 Deep Orange Colored Lights Over Lebanon Indiana (Chinese Lanterns)

Brian Vike's Favorite Cases.

Date:  October 1, 2011

Time:  Approxamtlty 9:00 p.m.

My daughter and I originally saw 3 deep orange colored objects in a rectangle shape around 9:00pm October 1, 2011. We pulled over in the car in town to try and find them and they slowly went  out do east of us about 20 to 30 degrees up from ground.

As those went out, we started to see a steady group of the same shape and color. 9:15 to approximately 9:30pm. In total 25-30 objects were seen going in the same direction ending the same way the proceeding 3 did. I was informed that a few Facebook people in the area saw these also.

If you have seen anything like this in the same area please be kind enough to contact Brian Vike at: houstonbri7@gmail.com with the details of your sighting. All personal information is kept confidential.

21 Red Orange Lights Over Huntington Beach California (Chinese Lanterns)

Brian Vike's Favorite Cases.

Date:  November 2, 2011

Time:  From about 8:00 p.m. to 8:10 p.m.

Location: Huntington Beach, Ca. Life guard Pier 20. Off Goldenwest Blvd and PCH

We seen many. There was about 21 of them, they look like they were all lifting off at the same time. Not like airplanes do, one after another. These reddish orange things, flew at a regular speed until they just disappeared.

They seem to move  faster as they got further. The strange thing about it was that, the fifth little flashing light, just starting floating and flashing a bright white light, none of the other lights flew past that one, they all seemed to follow a path.

They just kept coming one after another, up to 21. We got to a part of the beach right off Goldenwest, and spent about an hour at the beach. From about 7:00 p.m. to 8:10 p.m.

My friend noticed them right away. We just sat and chatted for about 15 minutes watching them fly away. When airplanes fly by, it was very obvious that they were not the same colors, mobility or speed.

For a minute I had guessed they might be Chinese lanterns, because of their colors and proximity to each other.

Glad we're not the only ones who seen this.

Orange Lights In The Sky Over Victoria West Vancouver Island British Columbia (Case Solved – Chinese Lanterns)

Date:  March 16, 2013
Time:  Approx: 11:00 p.m.

Vike Factor Note: A witness wrote to me just now and informed me that the orange lights so many people saw were Chinese lanterns. They told me they were released in a ball park in honor of someone’s Birthday.

Hi Brian, I live in Victoria West and last night I saw a large number of floating lights in the sky moving from south to north. The movement was not consistent with what I would expect from Chinese Lanterns, although I do consider that to be a possibility.
Quite a few other people in my neighborhood saw as well, this would have been around 2300hrs.

I looked for event postings of Chinese lantern launches in the Vic West/Esquimalt area and found nothing, have you heard any other reports from last night?

If you have seen anything like this in the same area please be kind enough to contact Brian Vike at: sighting@telus.net with the details of your sighting. All personal information is kept confidential.

Also, please feel free to send in your sightings that have happened years ago. So many of these older sightings are nothing short of amazing.

5 Orange Lights In The Sky Over Trout Lake North Bay Ontario (Chinese/Wish Lanterns)

Date:  December 24, 2012
Time:  Evening.

Hi there. My father-in-law took some pictures on Christmas Eve 2012 of 5 orange lights over Trout Lake.

Check the North Bay Nugget website for the picture.

I am thinking they were Chinese Lanterns (Sky Lanterns), but he is sure they were not after viewing many other pictures of sky lanterns. Also the way they moved was opposite to any wind on that night.

Vike Factor Note: I would fully agree that what is seen in the sky, is Chinese/Wish lanterns.

You can view the photo at the newspaper’s website: http://www.nugget.ca/2012/12/29/mysterious-lights-appear-over-trout-lake

Orange Lights Seen Over Geraldo's At LaSalle Park Burlington Ontario (Chinese/Wish Lanterns)

Date:  October 12, 2012
Time:  Approx: 9:00 p.m.

Hi, my cousin got married at Geraldo's at LaSalle Park in Burlington Ontario at approximately 9:00 p.m. time, they released Chinese Lanterns which were very exciting to see.

They light the bottoms on fire and then hold them until they fill with hot air. They were about 3 feet tall and it took a while for the party to fill their lanterns as it was a colder night.

3 were released at almost the same time, they twirled together as they got higher in the sky. We were all quite surprised at how high they got and they moved in interesting patterns and then one flamed out and dove off to one side.

It could have looked like something darting away. We have video of it, but it is so hard to see after they are released as the camera had a hard time focusing on the little lights as they assented.

After the three that twirled together, 2 more were released so they were down below the others. When they flamed out, we could watch the lanterns fall slowly. They are made of cardboard and are biodegradable so they do not harm nature.

I would definitely do this sort of thing for a party, but understand how as they get higher in the sky, people who don't know an event is happening would be surprised to see orbs of light in the sky with no sound.

Orange Balls Of Light Seen Flying Over Brantford Ontario (Chinese Lanterns)

Date:  August 10, 2012
Time:  Evening.

Hi Brian, I came upon your website today after searching online for UFO information in Ontario. The orange balls we saw met exactly the same description. There was a series of three followed by two others, each about five minutes later, so five in all.

We had witnessed one of these also in June. They were all noiseless and clearly ascending from the earth.

Thought I'd contribute to the sightings on your site. Thanks for all the information you provide.

Update - Additional Information:

Hi again, we have concluded that they were Chinese lanterns: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j4K00JQG5WE and I even found a downed one this morning proving this theory!

If you have seen anything like this in the same area please be kind enough to contact Brian Vike at: sighting@telus.net with the details of your sighting. All personal information is kept confidential.

17 Orange Objects In The Sky Over Oak Island/Mahone Bay Nova Scotia (Chinese Lanterns)

Date:  August 10, 2012
Time:  Approx: 10:15 p.m.

Brian, my husband, myself and two neighbours watched 17 orange orbs go across the night sky this evening around 10:15 or so.

They were about 300 feet up and no sounds whatsoever.

They were over Oak Island (we live along the coast in this area) and seemed to be in one long line heading for Chester area.

By the time I ran to get my binoculars they had disappeared. It was very odd. I don’t know where we could phone to talk about this.

My husband thought he would call the Chronicle Herald and let them know, perhaps others have seen them.

They must have seen them. This is the boating season and there is lots of activity on the water. I would expect there will be other reports. Have you heard anything? Sincerely.

Update - Additional Information:

The mystery has been solved. They were Chinese lanterns set off at Atlantica Motel, probably by a wedding party.

If you have seen anything like this in the same area please be kind enough to contact Brian Vike at: sighting@telus.net with the details of your sighting. All personal information is kept confidential.

On July 30, 2012 we were sitting in our backyard in Oakville, Ontario we saw 12 orange and red balls of lights this happened around 9:30 p.m. they were so obvious.

I'm surprised there was no reports on the news in regards to this.

12 Orange Lights In The Sky Over Oakville Ontario (Chinese/Wish Lanterns)

Date:  July 30, 2012
Time:  Approx: 9:20 p.m.

Hi there, my wife and I both saw at least 12 of them at around 9:20 p.m. tonight.

What are they. I am so surprised that this has happened before. Any idea what it could be.

There has been an increased amount of planes even military flying over weekend at low heights.

Additional Information:

I was on Postmaster and Pine Glen in Oakville Ontario. There were many dots in a northeast heading.

Some were in clusters and seem to merge and others stood alone, but as quickly as they appeared, they quickly vanished shortly after by the time I was in my driveway.

A Vike Factor Note: This morning a fellow contacted me and informed me that the sightings of "orange colored lights" were indeed Chinese/Wish lanterns.

We kind of figured they were lanterns like most sighting of red/orange lights, but just could not confirm it. Now it is confirmed.

This is what he said:

The sightings of orange UFOs over Oakville, Ontario are Chinese lanterns.

Saw many lanterns being launched last night, identical to what I saw July 1, 2012.
