Bright White Light Seen In The Sky From Southwest Calgary Alberta

Date:  March 21, 2012
Time:  11:00 p.m.

Hi, I was just wondering what that light is in the western sky, and found your website. I tried to take a picture of it. But my flash reflected the neighbour's balcony.

Has anyone written in to say what it is? Have you heard anything? Is it a satellite?

Additional Information:

I was watching from southwest Calgary, Alberta, Canada, looking due west at 11:00 p.m. last night, March 21, 2012. I actually first noticed it at 9:30 p.m. as I was leaving a meeting and someone said, I'd like to know what that bright light in the sky is.

All of us (three people) looked up and acknowledged it there. One of the people thought it might be a satellite.

The light was bright white, but not round, multi-sided, multi-pointed. Looked like a star, but much, much closer.

I checked an astronomy site online, and they said Jupiter would be visible in the night sky in March. Maybe it was just Jupiter. I couldn't make out the sky maps on their site, but last night the sky was completely clear.

I could see Orion, the Big Dipper and other constellations I don't know the names for.

The bright, star-like light I saw was significantly west of Orion.

I watched for about a half hour, and it seemed to have a soft glow around it for a few minutes, then cleared again. It didn't move or change position in the sky.

When I looked again at around 12:30, the constellations had moved west and were lower in the sky, and I couldn't see the unusual bright, white light I'm referring to here. If it was a star or Jupiter, perhaps the earth's rotation just took it out of my line of sight around the corner of my apartment building.

Hope this helps.

  2. i noticed this bright light in the western sky from canmore, ab last night. The two other people I was with also acknowledged this and at one point (10PM?) all three of us saw a significantly smaller and duller light moving straight 'up' towards the bright star. The speed of the smaller light was quite fast but was much slower than shooting stars i've seen in the past. To be more precise, it covered several inches of sky as it closed in on the bright star in about 5-10 seconds; long enough for us to comment on what we were seeing. The smaller light intersected the bright light and there was nothing more...

What was the bright light? Could the flash mentioned by 'anonymous' in calgary be the result of a collision? What was the dull object travelling through space?

My curiousity has been peaked if anyone has any answers...

  3. Just saw the same described light in the sky. 9:45pm from my apartment in Edmonton. It was definitely stationary and not a star...too close for that. Noticed it in the western sky. Would really like to know what it is.

  4. I'm in BC Canada on vancouver island and its kind of wierd. I just went out for a smoke and there was this really bright white light that looked like a star but was so big and I thought maybe it was a planet so I've done a search to try and figure out what it is.

I also was just looking around and I thought I saw a star move a little then just disapear. This star was much dimmer aswell. I would also like to know what this really large white light that appears farther then the moon but definitely in our solar system.

  5. HI we are in NS on 10th June 2012 we were on Bear River about 10,15pm West of Orion we watched for 25 mins as a light far out in space pulsed between 30 and 40 seconds apart. The sky was crystal clear and there were no planes around that area in the sky. The flash was white / bluish white.

To the east of the pulse there was huge white flash that then became a spec of lite and travelled in an odd trajectory. About 10.45pm we watched as a huge bright white [ like phosphorous in water ] angular shaped and low in the sky travelled toward us [ this now was far west or Orion] it was travelling at a steady pace about plane speed - it flased larger and brighter and then became a dot again [ like a star ] and switched direction then vanished.

For the next 20 mins or so we saw three more of these lights one of which moved side to side then pulsed bright white then shot off in the opposite dircetion.

Last night 17th June on the other shore of NS we watched again as a low bright white light travelling slower than a plane and diamond shaped followed a path we have never seen ny aircraft take - this again after a few minutes pulsed huge and white then became a dot of light and dissapered off in the opposite direction.

To the west or Orion we watched a blue white light pulse large then travel fast then stop pulse again and sit there then vanish completely.

The activity did not take place when there were any planes in the sky.
